Editor/Grant Writer

The Centre for Probe Development and Commercialization, located at McMaster University is seeking an Editor/Grant Writer to support the writing, editing and coordinating of manuscripts and grants and related documents. The applicant will work with leading researchers to prepare both single investigator and multi-institutional proposals. The position will also support the writing and editing of leading scientific articles and promoting these online. 

This position is located in Hamilton and reports to the CEO.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The person should have a science or health science background and experience in grant and technical writing. Ability to work with modern software and graphics programs and have the ability to edit highly technical documents under tight deadlines. Person must be highly motivated and able to work independently, take significant pride in their work and accomplishments and be a problem solver. The person should also be able to interact with a wide variety of personalities and skill levels and have excellent proactive communication skills.

You view the position as being a critical service to the organization and therefore it is key that you provide a highly responsive and positive "customer service". You are flexible in your approach and demeanor in order to align with the shifting demands and priorities. You have the ability to review, summarize and check instructions to authors and applicants and have a keen eye to ensure the final version of any document is polished and meets very high standards.


  • A minimum of a Bachelors degree plus 3-5 years of grant submission/project co-ordination experience OR a Masters degree plus 4-7 years of publishing, editing or managing experience (preferred).
  • Experience in substantive editing, stylistic editing and copy editing required. 
  • Advanced knowledge of scientific writing, technical publishing, grammar, syntax and usage. Proficiency in Word and Excel and experience working with modern forms of communication is an asset.
  • Ability to organize electronic and print data materials.
  • Proficiency in Word and reference management software (i.e. EndNote) required and working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Writer, Photoshop and Illustrator would be helpful.
